Green D'Anjou Pears

Bonjour d’Anjou!  The d’Anjou pear also known as the Anjou pear originated in Belgium and is named after the Anjou region of France.  They first appeared in the United States in 1842 and have become one of the most popular pear varieties.  The Anjou pears are juicy when ripe and their subtle sweetness hints at a refreshing lemon-lime flavor.  These pears are favored by chefs and home cooks alike as they hold up well when baking, poaching, roasting or grilling.  The Anjou pear makes a delicious snacking item for the family and can turn a traditional salad into a gourmet salad by adding color, flavor, and crunch.

Ripeness and Storage:

Unlike other green variety pears who’s skin turns yellow as it ripens, the green Anjou pear stays green.  Anjou pears may take 3 to 5 days to become fully ripe and can be kept in the refrigerator to slow the ripening process down. To check ripeness, gently press your thumb near the stem end of the pear.  When it gives slightly, the pear is ripe.  If you wait for the middle of the pear to be soft to the touch, you’ll find that the pears interior is overripe.
